CHAPTER 12

CAMP CARROLL, I CORPS

“Because we need one, that’s why,” Bates said patiently, as though he were explaining something obvious to a very small boy.

“Who’s we? It would appear there’s more than enough out there to satisfy everyone at Khe Sanh with a few left over, so who’s the we that thinks they’d like an NVA soldier all their own, hmm?” Gerber asked in much the same tone.

“G-2, G-3, G-5, all the usual pogues. Who did you think?”

“Oh, I don’t know. Says here in the Stars and Stripes that McCarthy did so well in New Hampshire a couple of days ago that the administration is worried about its chances next fall. I figure maybe they want a bon-i-fied VC to replace McNamara so they can really flush this thing down the shitter and be done with it!” Gerber spat out with vehemence.

“Watch your mouth, Captain,” Bates said through clenched teeth, though if asked he’d have to agree with Gerber’s view on the SECDEF. “Anyway, it’s just an ancillary tasking. If you happen to see one you can grab, do it. Preferably one who’s heading north.”

“North?”

“North. G-2 thinks General Giap is pulling out his 325C Headquarters and maybe as many as five regular regiments. This word is allegedly based on secondhand information from a source in Giap’s own headquarters as passed to a courier who walked right up to the wire and chieu-hoied three days ago. Seems there was another defector a month ago who tried to warn them about Giap’s intentions, and he was largely ignored. So the brass wants to verify this one and thinks HUMINT is the best way to do it. If you can get them some human intelligence, do it, but the reflectors are your main job. We’re redefining the Khe Sanh TAOR as a final step in bringing this operation to a close and opening the next one.”

Gerber looked over at Tibbets, who was busy scratching himself and seemed oblivious to what the colonel was saying.

“Which operation is this, anyway? Crockett? Ardmore? Scotland? Seems like every time I hear anything about this place it’s called something different,” Gerber complained, then realized his voice was very near a whine. The past two months had worn down his patience. Hopefully it wouldn’t affect his judgment, he thought, then sought to shift his attitude a bit. “Sorry. I slept well this morning, and I’m having a hard time dealing with it.”

“Understood. It’s still Operation Scotland. At least it was when I left this morning. And Niagara, Operation Niagara. That’s what the Air Force part of it is called, unless that’s changed, too. Next comes Operation Pegasus, then Scotland Two, or is it Scotland Too? It’ll all make sense when it’s over, Mack.”

Gerber couldn’t help but smile at this. It was a standard response these days and came as close to catch-22 as anything in twenty years, but it was SOP.

“Right. Now talk to us about monkeys.”

“Would you have believed two days ago we’d be having this conversation? Monkeys, Christ!” Bates said while shaking his head in resignation.
